Kinsley Mill Swale Maintenance

Overview

Muller completed maintenance and rehabilitation of the Kinsley Mill riprap swale in the City of Manassas, Virginia. The open-channel stormwater system had become overgrown and eroded, reducing its drainage capacity and threatening the stability of the swale and nearby ponds.

The team removed vegetation and debris before regrading approximately 120 linear feet of the low-flow channel. Muller placed approximately 100 square yards of topsoil to restore the intended grade and improve the movement of stormwater through the system.

Additional improvements included installing new filter fabric and placing 25 tons of riprap to reinforce the channel and reduce future erosion. Muller also repaired deficiencies in the concrete low-flow channel and stabilized disturbed turf areas with grass seed and erosion-control matting.

Completed in April 2024, the rehabilitation restored the swale’s ability to convey stormwater as designed. The improvements reduced erosion, protected adjacent infrastructure, and extended the service life of the open-channel drainage system.
